HyPER was delighted to attend the official launch of the Human Rights Greenhouse on the Hyde Park Estate.
The greenhouse is a project launched by local resident and HyPER member Chris Gunness, and designed and created by international artist – and also local resident – Tony Heywood.
The installation was opened by renowned journalist and presenter Ian Hislop, with Leader of Westminster Council Adam Hug also presiding. Ian spoke of the relatively short history of human rights and the incredible endeavours made by people to ensure of their recognition worldwide. He observed ironically that those who enjoy the most benefit from human rights are the ones most likely to demand their removal.
There was wide media coverage, including journalists from BBC London.
The artwork is an educational piece, consisting of a bright and celebratory greenhouse with the human rights declarations written on the glass. Inside are two perfectly balanced stones by stone-balancing artist, Adrian Gray, representing the precariousness of the human rights situation in the world.
